To University Or Not to University

Recently, I have encountered two opposing schools of thought: high school graduates must go to university, and high school students cannot be expected to get a job in the field of their degree.

There is a mother in my social circle, who insisted I scoot my graduate out the door and into a college education. He can never reach his full potential if I coddle him. Why should I send him away when he is not ready? Because then he will learn self-reliance.

There is another mother in my social circle, who insisted that I should not expect my graduate to use his college education. Having it is necessary; using it is optional.

Why should he go into debt for a degree he is not going to use? Because then he has his degree in something. He can always do something else later.

These mothers raised good children. I am raising good adults. From what I have seen of the decisions my graduate has made, I am confident that he will choose a path that suits him and throw all of his passions toward achieving that goal. It is not my place to choose his path for him.
